Welcome to Room 2 Newsletter No.1

5 February 2009

Kia ora everyone,

My name is Karyn Elizabeth Summers and I am your child’s class teacher for this year. Already I can see I have a talented and fun group of students to spend my time with. I hope to meet most of you at the Meet the Teacher evening next week. This is where I will outline my expectations and programmes for your children.

It is always an extremely busy time of year but an exciting one as well. I have indicated to the students that they require all their books at school by Monday. Apart from a lot of learning in literacy and numeracy as well as learning about the world we live in, our major event is camp. We will be going to the Berwick Lodge Camp in Term 2 around the 2nd week in May this will be confirmed at Meet the Teacher night.
We will need at least 5 adults for during the day and staying the night. So if you would like to join us for a fun week book your holidays now! There will be more information about Year 8 camp after the Meet the Teacher time next Wednesday.

I have asked the students to be responsible for their own wellbeing this year. This is meaning they take control of getting ready for school with the correct physical education gear and that they have completed all homework that has been set. They will also need to be responsible for getting information to you about what is happening in class and how this affects you as their caregivers. We will make a start!!

Self-responsibility is an important idea for this year and this is in preparation for the years ahead. We have some swimming sessions (4) at Moana Pool starting in February. A separate notice will follow soon with information about this activity. However if you enjoy the water and can help supervise (approx 1 hour) per session I would love to hear from you. Other events for the term will be outlined with newsletters closer to the time. I have encouraged the students to get plenty of sleep over the next few weeks and to eat well. The school routine is so different from the holiday mode it is helpful if students feel refreshed and ready to start each day!

I am always available to see or speak to you about your child. I’m usually at school by 8 o’clock and can be contacted through the office.

I am looking forward to an exciting year with your children and thank you for lending them to me.

See you all at the Meet the Teacher evening.

Keep smiling,
